GTA 6 file size: how to make room for 212 GB on PS5 and Xbox

A USB drive can park your other games, but only an internal SSD, an M.2 drive on PS5 or an expansion card on Xbox can run Grand Theft Auto VI.

Grand Theft Auto VI needs up to 212 GB of free space, and that space has to be on storage the console can play from. Rockstar Games says the pre-load file takes "up to 212 GB depending on your device," and Sony tells PS5 owners to clear at least 212 GB. Pre-loading, meaning the early download for people who pre-ordered, opens on PS5 at midnight local time on Tuesday, November 10, 2026, and on Xbox Series X and S at 12 a.m. GMT that day, which is 7 p.m. ET and 4 p.m. PT on Monday, November 9. The game itself unlocks on November 19, 2026. A USB drive can hold your other games while GTA 6 takes their place, but it can't run GTA 6 on either console. To play it from extra storage, PS5 owners need an M.2 SSD and Xbox owners need a Storage Expansion Card.

How big is GTA 6 on PS5 and Xbox?

Rockstar's November 3, 2026, post gives one ceiling, 212 GB, and says the exact size depends on the device. It doesn't break the figure down by console. Sony's own post uses the same number as a floor: clear a minimum of 212 GB on your PS5. Plan for the full amount on any console, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series S included.

That size makes GTA 6 one of the heaviest single downloads a console owner will meet this year. Seagate wrote in June 2025 that big-budget games often go past 100 GB. GTA 6 roughly doubles that.

The size matters more than usual because of how the launch works. Every route into the game is a download. Digital pre-orders pre-load from November 10. Our GTA VI launch gallery story covers the console settings Rockstar asks for so the pre-load runs on its own.

Will GTA 6 fit on my console?

Here is how a 212 GB game compares with the drive in each console, using the capacities Sony and Microsoft list on their US product pages. Part of every drive holds the system software, so the space you can actually use is smaller than the label. Check Settings, then Storage, on either console for the real number.

ConsoleBuilt-in SSDGTA 6 as a share of the label
PS5 Digital Edition825 GBabout 26%
PS5 with disc drive (slim)1 TBabout 21%
PS5 Pro2 TBabout 11%
Xbox Series S512 GB or 1 TBabout 41% or 21%
Xbox Series X1 TB or 2 TBabout 21% or 11%

The 512 GB Xbox Series S is the tight one. GTA 6 alone takes about two-fifths of its label capacity before the system's own share comes off, so most owners of that model will have to delete or move several games first. The PS5 Pro, which ships with 2 TB, and the 2 TB Galaxy Black Xbox Series X have the most room to spare.

How to free up space without deleting games

Both consoles let you park games on an ordinary external USB drive and bring them back later. That is the cheapest fix if you own a spare drive, and it keeps your other games off the internet download queue when you want them again.

On PS5, Sony accepts a USB drive with SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or faster and between 250 GB and 8 TB. Plug it straight into the console, not through a hub. Format it under Settings, then Storage, then USB Extended Storage. To move a game, open the Game Library, highlight it, press the Options button and choose Move Games and Apps. PS4 games run straight from the USB drive. PS5 games don't: you copy them back to the console before you play.

On Xbox Series X and S, Microsoft supports external USB 3.1 drives, and the consoles have three USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports. Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox games play straight from such a drive. Games optimized for Xbox Series X and S, the label Microsoft gives games built for the current consoles, can sit on a USB drive but have to move back to internal storage or an expansion card to run. GTA 6 comes only to PS5 and Xbox Series X and S, with no PS4 or Xbox One version, so on either console it has to run from the fast storage.

Which M.2 SSD works in a PS5 or PS5 Pro?

An M.2 SSD is a small circuit-board drive that slides into the expansion slot inside the console. Once it's formatted, the PS5 treats it like its own storage: games download to it, update on it and run from it. Sony sets these requirements on its support page:

RequirementWhat Sony asks for
InterfacePCI-Express Gen4x4 M.2 NVMe SSD, Socket 3 (Key M)
Capacity250 GB to 8 TB
Lengths2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 or 22110
Size with coolingUp to 25 mm wide and 11.25 mm thick
Speed5,500 MB/s sequential read or faster recommended
CoolingA heatsink or heat transfer sheet is required

M.2 SATA drives, an older and slower type, don't work. Sony also warns that a drive above 5,500 MB/s still might not match the console's built-in drive in every game, and it suggests moving a game back to internal storage if it misbehaves on the M.2.

The job takes a #1 Phillips screwdriver and a well-lit table. On the slim PS5 and the PS5 Pro, which Sony groups as models CFI-2000 and CFI-7000, you lift off a small triangle cover and open the slot cover under it. The original PS5, model CFI-1000, has you slide off a whole side panel. When the console starts again, it walks you through formatting the drive, which erases the whole drive, and you can't split it between the PS5 and other uses.

Two rules shape how you use the extra space. All of one game's data must sit in one place, so GTA 6 goes either fully on the M.2 drive or fully on the built-in SSD. And to download it straight to the new drive, set Settings, then Storage, then Installation Location before the pre-load starts.

Xbox Storage Expansion Card: sizes and what it costs

Xbox Series X and S have no open slot for a standard drive. Instead, each console has a storage expansion port on the back, and the only drive Microsoft offers for it is the Seagate Storage Expansion Card for Xbox Series X and S. Microsoft says it keeps the same peak speed and performance as the console's internal SSD, so GTA 6 can install to it and run from it. The same card works in a Series X and a Series S, and you can move it between consoles with your games on it.

Microsoft's accessory page lists the card in 1 TB, 2 TB and 4 TB versions and says prices vary by retailer. Seagate launched the 4 TB card on June 9, 2025, at $499.99. Neither company lists a current price for the smaller cards on those pages, and Seagate's own product page shows the card out of stock as of November 7, 2026, so check stores before counting on one arriving before the pre-load.

There is no setup to speak of. Plug the card into the port, and you can set it as the default install location, play from it or move games between it and the internal drive.

Pre-load times for GTA 6

Pre-loading opens at different moments on the two platforms, which matters if you plan to clear space the night before.

PlatformPre-load opensEastern timePacific time
PS5 and PS5 ProMidnight local time, November 10, 202612 a.m. ET, Tuesday, November 1012 a.m. PT, Tuesday, November 10
Xbox Series X and S12 a.m. GMT, November 10, 20267 p.m. ET, Monday, November 94 p.m. PT, Monday, November 9

Xbox owners in the US get the download five hours earlier on the East Coast and eight hours earlier on the West Coast than a midnight local start would give them. The release date stays November 19, 2026, for both; our GTA 6 release date guide has the details.

What should you buy, if anything?

Start by counting what you already have. On a 1 TB or 2 TB console, deleting or moving two or three big games usually opens enough room, and every game you buy digitally can be downloaded again for free later.

The 512 GB Xbox Series S and the 825 GB PS5 Digital Edition are the models where a purchase makes the most sense, because GTA 6 alone takes a large share of their free space. On PS5, an M.2 drive gives you storage that plays games at full speed. On Xbox, the Seagate card is the only option that does.

A USB drive is the budget choice on both platforms. It won't run GTA 6, but it can hold the games you move off the internal drive to make room, and copying them back doesn't touch your internet connection.

If you'd rather wait for Sony's next console than upgrade this one, our PS6 release date story sorts what Sony has confirmed from what it hasn't.

FAQ

Can I pre-load GTA 6 from a disc or a boxed copy?

Boxed copies contain a download code rather than the game itself, and Rockstar says those code-in-box versions reach retailers from November 12, 2026. Redeem the code and the console downloads the full game, so the same space rules apply.

Will GTA 6 get bigger after launch?

Rockstar hasn't published a day-one patch size or any figure beyond the pre-load. Keep some headroom past 212 GB so updates can install without another round of deleting.

Does an M.2 SSD void the PS5 warranty?

Sony says coverage generally stays in place when the drive meets its specifications and you follow its installation steps. Damage caused by a wrong drive or a botched install isn't covered.
