SteamOS 3.9 update: what's new for Steam Deck, Steam Machine and Steam Frame
What changes under the hood, the fixes each Valve device gets and the feature that shipped switched off.

Valve released SteamOS 3.9 to every user on October 23, 2026, at 6:04 p.m. ET, as version 3.9.5 on the Stable channel. It's the first major SteamOS update since 3.8 arrived on June 17, 2026, and like every SteamOS update it's free.
Under the hood, the system now runs on the Linux 7.2 kernel and an updated Arch Linux base. Desktop Mode, the PC-style desktop that sits behind the game interface, moves from KDE Plasma 6.4.3 to Plasma 6.7.3. The update spent almost two months in testing after reaching the Preview channel, Valve's opt-in beta, on August 28, 2026.
On the Steam Deck, the headline change is lower power use while the handheld sits idle with no audio playing. Valve describes it as an idle improvement and hasn't put a number on the battery gain, so don't expect longer play sessions from it.
The Steam Machine, Valve's living room console, gets three fixes: Remote Play works again when it boots with no display connected, firmware updates apply reliably, and STAR WARS: Galactic Racer no longer slows down after the machine wakes from sleep.
Steam Frame owners get better support for the headset's wireless adapter. The frame limiter, the setting that caps how many frames per second a game renders, also stops applying to VR games streamed from a Steam Machine to the Frame, which matters for a headset whose display runs at up to 144Hz.
Other handhelds that run SteamOS benefit too. Forza Horizon 6 no longer crashes the Legion Go 2, which also gets preliminary brightness control, and Valve fixed Elden Ring and Dark Souls III on PCs with Intel Panther Lake chips. If you're still deciding on Valve's headset, our Steam Frame review covers who it's for.

Does SteamOS 3.9 add hibernation?
Preliminary hibernation support is in the system, but it's missing from the Game Mode menus and stays off on the Steam Deck because of an outstanding driver bug.
How do I install SteamOS 3.9?
Devices on the Stable channel get version 3.9.5 as a system update. On a Steam Deck or Steam Machine, look for it in Settings, under System.
What else changed in SteamOS 3.9?
Valve switched the default Wi-Fi software to wpa_supplicant, which reconnects faster after the device wakes from sleep.
