When is Half-Life 3 coming out? Everything we know (and why Valve is giving you Alyx instead)

Nineteen years after Episode Two, the codename HLX is back in the headlines just as Valve launches its headset. We separate rumor from fact.

The official answer: Valve hasn't announced Half-Life 3

As of September 15, 2026, there's no announcement, trailer or release date for Half-Life 3. Valve has never publicly confirmed the game, and the last numbered entry in the main story is still Half-Life 2: Episode Two from 2007, which ended on one of gaming's most famous cliffhangers.

Everything else you read is rumor. Some of it comes from sources with a solid track record, but it's still rumor.

HLX: the project that almost certainly exists

What we do have are clues. Dataminers have found references to “HLX” in Valve's files, and several insiders who have followed the company for years say that's the codename for a new Half-Life in development.

A project existing inside Valve doesn't mean it ships: the studio is famous for canceling or rebuilding entire games. The community even has a name for it, “Valve Time,” the clock on which “soon” can mean years.

The rumor that missed: launching with the Steam Machine

In December 2025, spring 2026 made the rounds as the window for the Steam Machine, the Steam Frame and Half-Life 3, with the game as a launch title for Valve's console.

It didn't happen. The Steam Machine launched on June 30, 2026, starting at $1,049, with no Half-Life 3. A useful reminder of how much circulating dates are worth.

July 2026: “2026 might no longer be on the table”

In July, the same insider came back with a new version: Valve had reportedly pushed the game back because it didn't yet meet the studio's bar, had dedicated an entire office floor to it and had separated it from the Steam Machine as its requirements grew.

His line was that 2026 might no longer be on the table. None of it is confirmed by Valve, but it does cool any hope of seeing it this year.

Will Half-Life 3 be a VR game?

Fair question: the last Half-Life, Alyx, launched in 2020 as a VR exclusive, and its ending rewrote what we thought we knew about how Episode Two wrapped up. In other words, the story has already moved forward inside a headset.

Even so, insiders tracking HLX describe it as a traditional flatscreen game, not a VR exclusive. Valve hasn't said anything, so treat that as what it is: unconfirmed.

Meanwhile, Valve is giving you Alyx

The Half-Life Valve is pushing today is a different one. The Steam Frame, which launched September 14 starting at $1,059, includes a copy of Half-Life: Alyx in every kit, and Valve built a native version that runs directly on the headset, which arrives after day one.

If you've never played it, it's the best way to understand why so many people are still waiting for the sequel. We cover price, the lottery and how to get one in How much is the Steam Frame?.

Reality check, and a plan for the wait

Today there's no date, no platform and no confirmation the game will even be called Half-Life 3. If someone sells you an exact date, be skeptical. What already exists is the feeling of being inside a shooter with your whole body: it's called VR.
